Rick (リック Rikku), real name Eric (エリック Erikku) Schnauzer, was Kuon Hizuri's best friend in America. He taught Kuon to stand up for himself and gave him advice. He even gave Kuon a chicken named Brian. He was Tina's boyfriend.

Unfortunately, his life ended when he was hit by a car while chasing Kuon.

He has never appeared in the series except in Kuon's flashbacks. His grave was seen when Tina went to visit revealing part of his name 'Eric Schn..[1].'

Rick may be connected to the watch brand 'Relucross' as the watch that was given to Kuon by him was of that brand. And Tina also has a watch of that brand with a very familiar design.

Personality[]

Rick seems to be an outgoing person, but also tough. He encourages Kuon Hizuri to overcome his fears, once by making him eat Maui omelet,[2] a recipe that he invented. Kuon later uses his Maui omelet and shares it with Kyoko Mogami, so he could overcome her own fears.

Tina and Rick's friend speak about him after visiting his grave. He was soft for certain people in his life (Tina and Kuon) indicating he might have been hard on others. Tina thinks he would be angry with her for being so heartless but Rick's friend tells her he wasn't the type to get hung up on stuff like that. Considering this, Rick likely would have been disappointed in Tina but understanding of the context, as long as she made an effort to make amends he probably wouldn't be angry[1].

Appearance[]

Rick has a strong build and seems older than Kuon Hizuri. He has a dark-colored hair, while his face was never shown. He is assumed to be non-Japanese as he lives in America and talks in English in Kuon's memories.

Violence Mission arc[]

Relucross

Tina's watch

Rick's death was quite violent and Kuon witnessed the whole incident adding to the trauma. It did not help that his girlfriend's, Tina's, reaction was to lash out and viciously blame Kuon Hizuri for his death. It's something that has taken hold of him even in his Ren Tsuruga persona. He flashes back to Tina briefly when Kyoko Mogami tries to stop him from hurting Kei [3].

More of Rick's death is seen during Ren's PTSD episode after the near accident during the Dark Moon car stunt.[4][5] It shows that Rick's death is an accident, despite Kuon's reckless actions. Rick chased after him through his own choice and then was hit by a car at quite a high speed with how high and far his body was thrown. Considering the amount of blood, he was likely killed instantly. Tina was devastated and emotionally distraught as she clung to his body, and lashed out at Kuon calling him a murderer. That it would've been better if Rick had never met him, if he didn't exist, then Rick wouldn't have had to die! He should've been the one to die in Rick's place. Rick's death and Tina's words were a traumatic event for Ren, and even now it has a mental toll on him.

In another flashback, Tina was mentioned by Rick while he was teaching Kuon the special omurice. He said that he's only ever shared that recipe with Tina before he eventually showed it to Kuon.[6]

Technicolor Paradise arc[]

Rick is a constant spectre for Ren as while in Guam with Kyoko, he has been suppressing his happy feelings, unable to smile because he feels like he has stolen this blissful time from Rick and Tina.[7] Later on, when Kuon meets Kyoko as 'Ren Tsuruga', he makes a silent request for Rick while acknowledging that he was the cause of depriving his and Tina's future.[8]

Confession arc[]

Rick's grave is seen when Tina is visiting it. The grave marker says 'Eric Schn...' 'Forever in Our Hearts'. Rick's friend and Tina's conversation reveals some of Rick's character and personality. With Tina telling the man that Rick would likely be angry with her for being so heartless. The man must be a friend of Rick's as he reassures her that Rick wasn't the type to get hung up on stuff like that. He was so soft when it came to her too. Tina muses that there was one more person that he was soft for. Tina wonders morosely if still no one knows where Kuon has gone?[1]

Trivia[]

  • In ACT. 285, although it was not fully shown, it is revealed that Rick's full name is Eric Schn where it was written on his gravestone[1].
  • In ACT.321, the full gravestone is shown and Rick's full name is seen which is Eric Schnauzer.
